The Honourable James M. Farley QC




The Honourable James M. Farley is Senior Counsel to McCarthy Tétrault LLP, working with business law, bankruptcy and restructuring and litigation groups on a firm-wide basis.

Mr. Farley was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1982 and to the Superior Court of Ontario in 1989. In 1991, he became Supervising Judge of the Commercial List in Toronto where he presided over some of the most complex insolvencies in Canada.

Mr. Farley is a member of the International Insolvency Institute, Insolvency Institute of Canada, Insol International, American Law Institute, American College of Bankruptcy, American Bankruptcy Institute and International Law Association. His work includes:
  • Judicial liaison member with regard to the Canada-United States-Mexican NAFTA transnational insolvency project for the American Law Institute
  • Co-Chairman of Judicial Panel with regard to World Bank insolvency practices project and participant in continuing World Bank forums
  • Participant in United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) with regard to model insolvency legislation and implementation on a continuing basis

Mr. Farley earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) specializing in Economics from the University of Western Ontario. He was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship, earned a Bachelor of Arts specializing in Jurisprudence and a Masters degree from the University of Oxford. He earned a law degree from the University of Toronto.

Mr. Farley was elected to the Board of Directors of Assuris in 2008.
